Top 5 memorable performances by INDIA in SOUTH AFRICA:
It’s been 25 years since the 1st test was played between India and South Africa and since then,they have faced 33 times against each other and South Africa holds the upper hand,winning 13 of those.But according to India,they are yet to win a test series in South Africa.Can they turn the tables in the silver jubilee of their rivalry? 5.PRAVIN AMRE’s 103:
India,facing a post apartheid South African team that scored 254 in the 1st innings,were tottering at 38-4,courtesy 2 run outs. But then,the debutante Pravin Amre and Kiran More made sure that India take the lead. Initially showing some nervousness,he was a purist’s delight once he started playing his shots.Though the test ended in a draw,this knock will be remembered as one of the finest by a debutante in telling conditions.
Trivia: This was India’s 1st ever test against South Africa.
4.SACHIN TENDULKAR’s 146:
Location: Newlands,Cape Town.
A list is incomplete if it doesn’t have Sachin’s name in the list.One such knock came during the deciding test in Cape Town,when India were struggling at 28-2 after conceding 362.Then came Sachin,who was at his belligerent best,smashing Steyn and Morkel on what was his last appearance against South Africa.The test ended in a draw but his century ensured that India levelled the series 1-1.
Trivia: This was Sachin’s last test 100.
3.VIRAT KOHLI’s 119:
After electing to bat first on a bright sunny morning,India were in deep trouble at 24-2,but Kohli approached positively,respecting the good balls and smashing the bad balls on a surface that had lateral movement and bounce.He followed it up with a 96 in the 2nd innings.Though it was a drawn test,this knock was so special as it was a turn around in his career.
2. S.SREESANTH’s 5-40:
An out of favour Sreesanth’s finest exhibition of seam and swing bowling.Dismissed for 249,the bowlers had to provide initial breakthroughs and Sreesanth provided just that,bowling a probing line outside off-stump and finishing with 5-40.He followed with a 3-fer in the 2nd innings,and India won the match by 123 runs.This match is also remembered for his duel with Andre Nel.This win ended India’s 15 year winless streak in the Rainbow Nation.
1.VVS LAXMAN’s 96:
If one can write a book on “HOW TO BAT WITH THE TAIL?”,it can be written only by Laxman. After taking a handy 1st innings lead of 74,India were down and out at 48-3 before this man came in.He was pleasing to the eye and mixed caution with aggression to provide an innings that one will remember for ages to come.He missed out on a well-deserved 100 but this knock ensured that India won in grand style,winning by 87 runs and levelling the series 1-1 after the humiliation at Centurion.
